This stylish and sophisticated singer has long been established as one of Western Australia’s premier jazz vocalists, performing with her band since 1996. Penny is as well known to those in the know for her passionate and evocative stage presence as she is for her diverse arrangements of standards and contemporary tunes alike. Her position as vocal tutor in the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts’ jazz department is testament to her respected place in the thriving Perth Jazz scene.
Described as a ‘sumptuous storyteller’, you will find Penny on stage with the finest jazz men the country has to offer, including Carl Mackey, Pete Jeavons, Tom O’Halloran and Ben Vanderwal. Together, they feature at regular sell out shows at Perth’s premier music venue, the Ellington Jazz Club, or at the coolest hang outs around town, including the Quarry Amphitheatre, Subiaco Hotel Café, Hotel Northbridge, The Naked Fig, the Mad Monk Brewery or the University Club. Jazz club patrons and festival goers are also no strangers to the many shows the band has presented.
Any given show will take you on an eclectic journey, reflecting her wide range of influences, from Billie Holiday to Beady Belle, Duke Ellington to Kurt Elling, Joni Mitchell to Bjork, and all stops in between. With her hard swinging style, impeccable phrasing and intonation, and distinctive interpretations, Penny and her band ensure that every show is truly a unique experience.
