After his early beginnings on piano and clarinet, Carl Mackey took to the saxophone at age 14. By 15 he was gigging regularly around Perth and was playing alto with WAYJO. Upon leaving Churchlands High School, he entered the Bachelor of Jazz course at WAAPA. Carl was a finalist in the James Morrison Scholarship in 1989 and ‘90. He won the award for “Most Outstanding Soloist” at the 1994 Jazz Australia Showcase.
He has toured to India, New Zealand, England, Singapore, Cambodia and the United States as well as extensively throughout Australia.Carl has performed with Bernie McGann, Don Burrows, Mark Levine, Kitty Margolis, Terrell Stafford, Richie Cole, Barnie McAll, Phyliss Dyller and Lionel Hampton and has supported John Sc ofield, Ricki-Lee Jones, Tom Jones, Harry Connick Jnr, Ray Charles, James Brown and The Yellowjackets to name a few. He has recorded with Dale Barlow, Trilok Gurtu and James Morrison. He is currently teaching Saxophone at WAAPA. Carl has earnt a reputation as an energetic and exciting saxophonist and can be heard in some of Perth’s leading groups including, Speedball, Spur, The MPS and various sized outings under his own name.Book This Performer
