Since the age of four, the piano has played a major role in the life of Justin James.
Growing up in a musical household with classical and jazz influences helped seal the deal! From the poetry of Chopin, to the impressionism of Debussy, to jazz staples such as Bill Evans, George Shearing and Oscar Peterson and popular icons like Elton John and Billy Joel, he got to hear it all!
His style as both player and arranger is strongly influenced by George Duke and Greg Phillinganes, both based in Los Angeles, where he spent several years mentored by the late Martin Clarke (Bon Scott/Johnny Young), working on writing projects and gigging.
Trained initially in classcial piano at the WAAPA (then WA Conservatorium), and earlier studying vocals, keyboard and percussion at Perth Modern School as part of the music scholarship program, he began to champion an interest in performance, arranging and composition, thus sparking a broad spectrum of live work from classical recitals to smooth jazz and chill out.
Justin has had the pleasure of recording and playing with a variety of talented local performers such as Marnie Kent, (Ginger Blu Collective), Troy Roberts (Void, Hip Mo Toast) and Annie Neil and has performed regularly around WA in venues such as Burswood Entertainment Complex, Rendezvous Observation City, His Majesty's Theatre, Mulberry On Swan and The Sheraton.
His entertaining and warm personality "talked himself" into radio for the last two decades where he was fortunate enough to win two ACRA (Australian Commercial Radio Awards) for announcing. He was also a presenter with ABC's national youth network Triple J. Justin has also written, arranged and produced award winning commercials for radio and television and was a finalist in the Music Oz Challenge after being commissioned to compose a "techno" anthem which says a considerable amount about his diversity and love of all genres of music.
Some of his corporate clients include Burswood Entertainment Complex, Rendezvous Observation City, Sheraton, Western Power, Coles Myer, & Toyota.
