For many years Mark Coughlan has held leadership roles at state and national levels in the performing arts and higher education sectors. He has been closely involved with Musica Viva Australia, the Australian Music Examinations Board, the Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conference and the University of WA School of Music. As a concert pianist Mark has performed in Europe, South East Asia and around Australia and broadcasts regularly on ABC Classic FM. He has been Musical Director for high profile events, such as the 2006 Leeuwin Estate concerts, and is Artistic Director of the Government House Foundation concert series, Music on the Terrace. Currently Mark is engaged in a range of musical activities including as a pianist, musical director, lecturer and music and theatre critic for The Australian newspaper.
Mark is a Director of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, the Government House Foundation and the St George’s Cathedral Arts Foundation. He also has business interests in the medical services sector. Mark studied in Perth and London and holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from The University of Western Australia, where he won five University prizes.
