Katherine Corecig

Katherine Corecig, née Potter, is a freelance violist and composer with an interesting musical background. After beginning violin lessons at the age of three with Daphne Murname, Katherine received a fairly traditional classical violin education. During her high school years she fell in love with jazz and became immersed in this idiom, leading her to complete a Bachelor of Music in jazz performance at the WA Academy of Performing Arts and switching her attention to the viola during the first year of this degree. She then went back to her musical ‘roots’, embarking on a Bachelor of Music degree in classical viola performance at the University of Western Australia studying viola with Tzvi Friedl, from which she graduated with First-Class Honours in 2010. Katherine has been a member of the Sartory String Quartet, Juniper Chamber Orchestra and several other ensembles and is a casual violist with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. She was a 2006 Australian Chamber Orchestra Emerging Artist and part of the ‘ACO2’. Recently, Katherine has enjoyed composing music for film, and her new soundtrack for Buster Keaton’s silent feature length film ‘The General’ premiered live to a screening as part of the 2009 Revelation Perth International Film Festival.
